Adults who choose to purchase cannabis should appropriately store and dispose of products and waste to avoid accidental ingestion by pets or children

January 9, 2023 — The Department of Consumer Protection is reminding adults 21 and older who choose to consume cannabis to do so responsibly.

Adult-use cannabis sales began at licensed hybrid retail locations at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 10. Adult-use sales are limited to 1/4 ounce of cannabis flower, or its equivalent, per transaction.

“While we know cannabis has been available for consumption through other means and states for some time, the legal, regulated sale of cannabis in Connecticut will make these products more widely available in our state,” said DCP Commissioner Michelle H. Seagull. “We are reminding all adults who choose to purchase and consume these products to do so responsibly, and to follow all applicable laws related to purchasing, carrying and consuming cannabis in your home or in public. We expect our licensees, as well as consumers, to be respectful of their surroundings and responsible in the sale, storage, consumption, and disposal of these products, which may be harmful to children or pets if accidentally ingested.”

Adults 21 and older may carry up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis flower or the equivalent on their person, and store up to 5 ounces in a locked compartment or glovebox in their vehicle. At home, cannabis should be locked and stored out of reach and out of sight of children and pets.

Cannabis should not be consumed before or during operation of a motor vehicle, and consumers should review and understand the laws related to public consumption in their town or city.

Consumers are encouraged to review relevant materials at ct.gov/cannabis and beintheknowct.org, a resource developed by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. Cannabis products that are ingested or consumed, such as edible products, can have a delayed onset of effects up two or more hours.

Information about how to safely store and dispose of cannabis and cannabis waste, and what to do in case someone, such as a child or pet, accidently ingests cannabis, is available for review at ct.gov/cannabis.

Cannabis was approved for adult-use in June 2021. Adult-use sales began Jan. 10, 2023 at licensed retailers. For information about Adult-Use Cannabis, visit ct.gov/cannabis.
